Doing Beautiful Things
I believe that to be “beautiful,” one must do beautiful things.
I stumbled upon a place, in St. Petersburg, Florida, that aims to make the beauty of art accessible to those with disabilities. “Creative Clay” is a non-profit organization that “helps people with disabilities achieve full and inclusive lives through access to the arts by providing expressive, educational, and vocational experiences.” Each artist is able to create beauty, without discrimination against their differences. All of the art created is put up for sale at the Creative Clay Location, and 50% of the money made from each piece goes back to the artist who created it.
Creative Clay was the first arts organization, of Florida, that aimed to specifically serve those who are disabled. The Community Arts program works with adult artists, serving five days a week, year-round. The Summer Studio is for artists 13-22. The Open Studio held for two hours a week, to give artists a chance to use the studio and supplies of Creative Clay.
I was so moved by this amazing group of people. I had to look at pieces over and over again, I was so amazed by all the work being put into making the artist feel able to create something so amazing. I bought two pieces myself and I am so happy I came across this amazing organization on my vacation.
Their end result is “that a formerly stigmatized population, through the art it creates and sells, demystifies stereotypes surrounding those with disabilities and creates a culture of acceptance throughout the community.”
I strongly encourage you to check out their website www.creativeclay.org, as well as donate if possible to help keep this amazing organization running as well as it is!
If you are ever in the area, pay them a visit!
