Managing Diabetes Mentally

by: CJ Walker

Managing diabetes can be challenging, but you can navigate it with strength and resilience with the right mindset and self-encouragement.

Here are some of the ways that I’ve found helpful with my own diabetes journey.

Educating & Taking Care of Yourself

Learn how to take care of your health and educate yourself on it.

I’ve found that educating myself on diabetes helped me take better of my health overall. I’ve been managing diabetes for 4 years now and I’m still learning something new!

Setting Realistic Goals

You can manage diabetes better if you set realistic goals. Motivate yourself to keep going by celebrating each milestone.

Based on the blood sugar level range established by my endocrinologist, I set my goals. Each time I reach a milestone, I celebrate by doing something I enjoy. I often celebrate my birthday by eating my favorite meal, or by crafting or purchasing a gift for myself.

Finding Your People

Get in touch with others who have similar experiences by joining diabetes support groups or online communities.

I am the leader of two online diabetes support groups. The members not only give me the opportunity to share my experiences and tips, but they also impart their knowledge. They keep me accountable and motivated. Without my people, I wouldn't have made it this far on this diabetes journey.

Practicing Self-Care

Practice self-care by setting aside time for activities that bring you joy and help you relax.

I love crafting and it has helped me so much mentally. Creating something beautiful helps me stay sane and allows me to temporarily take my focus off of what's happening.

Focus on the positive changes you're making and the progress you're making when managing diabetes.

Don't beat yourself up if you make a mistake or experience a setback. Practice self-compassion and understand that managing diabetes is a continuous learning process. You're capable of managing diabetes with the right tools and support, so don't give up.
